Bark Mulch Tips

When ordering from our Bark Mulch, Nuggets, and Woodchips varieties, we recommend a minimum final depth of 3" (4" is optimal). For areas without existing mulch, you'll need 1 cu. yd. every 80-100 sq. ft. (take into account the percentage of plant coverage). 1 cu. yd. = 10'x10'x3". Use our volume calculator (found within each product variety) to determine your quantity.

Advantages of Mulching

Mulch can be a game-changer for your landscape! Here are some benefits:

  • 1. Weed Control: Mulch acts as a barrier, reducing weed growth by blocking sunlight and making it harder for weed seeds to germinate.

    2. Moisture Retention: Mulch helps soil retain moisture by reducing evaporation, ensuring plants have a steady water supply even during dry periods.

    3. Soil Improvement: Organic mulches break down over time, enriching the soil with nutrients and improving its structure and fertility.

    4. Temperature Regulation: Mulch acts as an insulator, keeping soil cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, which helps protect plant roots.

    5. Erosion Prevention: Mulch helps prevent soil erosion by reducing the impact of rainwater and wind on the soil surface.

    6. Aesthetic Appeal: Mulch adds a finished look to your landscape, enhancing its visual appeal and creating a clean, uniform appearance.

    7. Pest Control: Some types of mulch, like cedar or pine, have natural insect-repelling properties, helping to keep pests at bay.

Mulch Application

  • Measure the area to be mulched. Enter the numbers into our volume calculator (found within each product variety) to obtain how many cubic yds are needed. We suggest an average depth of 3"-4" for best results.
  • Hand edge or border the bed or tree wells so that grass and weeds can't creep in. If the area has existing weeds or grass, apply a herbicide (for best results) or remove the weeds by hand. Wait 5-7 days to apply mulch.
  • Apply a 2'' (top-ups) to 4'' (new application) layer of mulch. Allow some space for the plant stem to move so that it does not rub on the mulch.
  • Water the mulched area periodically over the next 2-3 days to help the mulch bond with the soil and keep it from blowing in heavy winds.
  • As mulch decomposes, rake it to freshen it up. Mulch should be topped up when it gets below 3 inches. Ensure you are topped up in the summer and winter to protect roots from damaging winds and extreme temperature changes.
  • Try not to place mulch right up against the base of your trees, as this can cause the bark to rot.
  • Coloured woodchips may leach some nitrogen from your soil until it begins to decompose. Use a fertilizer during the growing season in conjunction with coloured woodchips is recommended.
